Shootout Tournaments

Like a step tournament, a shoot-out tournament is played according to a series of single table tournaments. During these phases, a player can progress to the next round and can win or lose and go home.

A tournament shoot-out is an unique event. In a step tournament, that we have analysed in the last article, a player can play every single step each time he wants. For example, if a player wins a phase, then getting buy-in for phase two, the player can play the same stage of the tournament on the same day and the next day or even, for example, two weeks later.

Shoot-out events have rather different structures. Some events reward only one player from each table, while others allow more players to win. However, almost all tournaments allow you to win prize money only at the final table. The jackpot thus tends to be very well distributed among the players who manage to reach the final table.

For example, suppose that 100 players participating in such events. There are ten players per table. One way to structure this tournament is to have only one player from each table, which can advance to the next round. At the final table there will be the winners of each table, which will compete for the final victory. In general, all players at the final table will receive a prize, but the first and second place will receive prizes much larger than the other players.

However, a shoot-out event could also have three players per table that can advance to the next round. At this point in the second round they play at three tables. Also during this second round only three players pass per table, so the finale will be among of nine players.

In addition to these ways, a shoot-out tournament can be structured in various ways. The structure should determine the strategy to adopt. If a player passes the turn for each table, then you have to play very aggressively. You will have to play a lot and hope to win all the chips at the table.

But if more players are able to advance to the next round then you should have a more cautious approach, aiming to keep a big stack.
